NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY)– Saturday is the first anniversary of Hurricane Florence, making landfall in the Cape Fear. UNCW’s “Wings Up For Wilmington” is organizing a day of service.

Organizers say this is a special time for the campus. The main commonality here is that they want to lend a helping hand to the community.

Organizers say they started planning for the event this summer with students, faculty, and staff in mind. They knew those around them would be uneasy about the anniversary.

That’s what gave them zeal for wanting to give back to the community.

So far, more than 300 people have signed up to help at places like Habitat for Humanity, The Cape Fear Literacy Council, and Adopt An Angel.

Organizers, Diana Ashe and Amanda Boomershine say they wanted to make the anniversary a positive event.

Ashe told us, “We knew that our colleagues were going to be feeling some kind of way, and wanted to create an event. We wanted to find a way to give back to the community.”

“I think that this is like one of the first times that the campus has come together as an entire unit to go, and basically make what could’ve been a rough day when reflecting what happened a year ago,” Boomershine said.

They tell us people can still volunteer. There is also a food drive on campus for Nourish NC.
