BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — You have two chances to help save hundreds of lives this week in the Cape Fear.

The Cape Fear area chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting a blood drive and a free smoke alarm installation event in Brunswick County.

On Friday, April 26, WWAY and John E. Jacobs Post 68 are hosting a blood drive at the WWAY Event Center in Leland from 10AM to 2:30PM.

You can sign up in advance at redcrossblood.org or stop by the event center on Friday.

Then, on Saturday, the Red Cross is hosting a Sound the Alarm for Home Fire Safety event in Brunswick County. The Home Fire Campaign helps save lives by installing free smoke alarms in homes that don’t have them, and by educating people about home fire safety.  Cape Fear Area Chapter Executive Director, James Jarvis says seven times a day, someone dies in a home fire in the U.S. They want to change that by installing free smoke alarms in homes that need them.

To join them for a great volunteer opportunity, please join us at the Supply Volunteer Fire Department this Saturday at 9 a.m. The meeting place is at Station #13 at 47 Southport-Supply Rd. SE, Supply, NC 28462.

If you are interested in having a Red Cross team visit your home to test your smoke alarms, install new ones, if needed, and help you develop a home fire escape plan, you can go to www.soundthealarm.org/nc to request a home visit.
Nationwide, Jarvis said they have installed more than 2.8 million free smoke alarms. He said 2,102 people, including 665 children, have already been saved thanks to their ability to hear a free smoke alarm that we installed, including 68 people here in North Carolina.
